           Laparoscopic/Minimally Invasive Surgery

Our surgeons use the latest in laparoscopic surgical techniques to treat a variety of surgical problems using the smallest incisions possible.  Laparoscopic surgery, which is also known as minimally invasive surgery, is intended to minimize the incision site thereby reducing postoperative pain and speeding up recovery times.

Our surgeons, who pioneered laparoscopic surgery in the Philadelphia area, perform a number of procedures using this technique.  For example, almost all gallbladder surgery can be performed laparoscopically.  This approach also is used to investigate chronic abdominal pain which can lead to the removal of the appendix.  Colon cancer can now be treated laparoscopically using very small incisions to remove the cancerous part of the colon.

SSPC surgeons are now taking minimally invasive surgery to a new level by performing laparoscopic procedures through a single half inch incision hidden in the umbilicus or completely endoscopically, with no incisions at all.  Single port surgery results in the potential for no visible scar and less surgical pain. By comparison, traditional laparoscopic surgery involves three to five half-inch incisions. Incisionless surgery is now being performed in the TIF procedure- Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication.  This is a new approach to the gold standard surgical procedure done for gastroesophageal reflux disease - GERD.  With low complication rates and rapid recovery, it is an attractive treatment option for this extremely common disease.

SSPC surgeons are at the forefront of these new kinds of surgery that continue to transform the minimally invasive arena, resulting in even better experiences for our patients.  At SSPC, patient care is the highest priority.  Procedures utilizing the singe port and incisionless techniques are instrumental in helping us fulfill our goal of offering patients the latest advancements in medicine.
