News & Noteworthy                                             November 2007

In the September 2007 edition of The Hospital Performance Report which is distributed by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4), you will find that the SSPC vascular surgery team which includes Dr. Ronald Mattson, Dr. Gerald Patton, and Dr. Sean Ryan scored in the first and second place in the number of cases performed in two vascular surgery categories.

Out of 56 hospitals in Southeastern Pennsylvania performing Carotid Endarterectomies (which is the removal of blockage of neck vessels), Drs. Mattson, Patton and Ryan performed more cases collectively at the Bryn Mawr, Paoli and the Chester County Hospitals than any other vascular surgery group in the area.  Additionally, their length of stay quality indicator was reported as 1.8 days as compared with an average of 2.5 days for all other hospitals in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Their second category of excellence was in the performance of Endovascular Repairs of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms. Out of the 56 hospitals which were reported, the SSPC vascular team ranked 2nd only to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, performing 57 of these procedures at the Bryn Mawr and Chester County Hospitals.  Similarly, their length of stay quality indicator surpassed all other hospitals with an average of 1.7 days versus the 3.3 days for all other groups in the Southeastern area.

In addition to our vascular surgeons, our general surgeons working at the Bryn Mawr, Paoli and Chester County Hospitals have reported excellent results in the area of laparoscopic gall bladder removal, performing approximately 700 of these procedures in 2006.  This far surpassed all other groups in the Southeastern region, and their collective average length of stay was 2.9 days which surpassed almost all other hospitals that were reported.   In addition to gall bladder removal, our general surgeons perform a number of advanced laparoscopic surgery procedures including laparoscopic herniorraphy, laparoscopic incisionial herniorraphy, laparoscopic colectomy and laparoscopic appendectomy.

The Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council was established in 1986 to help improve the quality and restrain the cost of health care.  We are proud to report these findings to our patients who can be confident that they have chosen a physician recognized for excellence in delivering quality patient care in the most cost effective manner.  For more information on the Council’s activities and reports, log on to www.phc4.org.
